A Fulfilled Dog Isn’t Created by Control — It’s Created by Choice

One of the biggest misconceptions about dog behaviour is that unwanted behaviours are simply the result of a dog being “naughty” or disobedient. In reality, as a dog behaviourist, one of the most common issues I see isn’t bad behaviour at all — it’s dogs living overly restricted lives.

Our dogs share a very human world. Their days are often shaped by our schedules, routines, and environments. Walks may happen on short leads, exploration can be limited, and many decisions are made entirely for them. Yet despite this, dogs are still driven by their natural instincts.

Dogs are wired to:

• Sniff

• Explore

• Dig

• Chew

• Run

• Observe

• Make decisions

When these natural behaviours are constantly prevented or restricted, frustration can build. Over time, this frustration can show up as reactivity, anxiety, restlessness, or behaviours that owners often label as disobedience.

Empowering your dog doesn’t mean creating chaos or removing boundaries. Instead, it means providing safe and appropriate opportunities for your dog to express their natural behaviours.

Simple changes can make a huge difference:

✨ Allow your dog time to sniff and explore during walks✨ Provide enrichment activities that encourage problem-solving✨ Encourage species-appropriate play✨ Offer safe choices whenever possible

When dogs have appropriate outlets for their natural drives, we often see dramatic improvements in behaviour. A dog who gets to express their instincts is typically calmer, more confident, and more connected to their owner.

At its core, behaviour often improves when a dog’s needs are properly met — not simply when behaviours are suppressed.

Let your dog be a dog. They may not say thank you in words, but you’ll often see it reflected in their behaviour.

At Help with Hounds, we focus on practical, compassionate dog training and behaviour guidance that supports both the dog and the owner. Based in Coggeshall, Essex, we offer in-person sessions across Mid and North Essex, as well as online behaviour consultations for dog owners throughout the UK.
