Why Teaching Your Puppy to Self-Settle Is One of the Most Important Training Skills when Puppy Training

When most people think about puppy training, they picture commands like sit, stay, or recall. But one of the most valuable life skills you can teach your puppy is much simpler: learning how to calmly settle on a bed or place mat.
At Help with Hounds, we encourage puppy owners to build this skill early. Teaching your puppy to relax on their own mat gives them a clear place where calm behaviour is rewarded and reinforced.

The benefits extend far beyond your living room. A puppy that can settle comfortably on their bed at home will also find it much easier to relax when you’re out and about — whether you’re visiting friends, attending training classes, or sitting at a café.
The best part about settle training is that it doesn’t rely on constant cues or repeated commands. Instead, it focuses on rewarding your puppy for choosing calm behaviour. With patience, good timing with your marker, and a few tasty treats, your puppy learns that relaxing on their bed is rewarding.
This is what makes the training so powerful. You’re not forcing your puppy to be calm. You’re teaching them that calmness is worthwhile, and allowing them to make that choice themselves.
Over time, this simple exercise can help build:
✔️ Better impulse control
✔️ Calm behaviour in busy environments
✔️ Stronger engagement with their owner
✔️ A more relaxed and peaceful household
Calmness is a skill — and like any skill, it improves through positive reinforcement and clear communication.
