Why Sitting Down on a Dog Walk Can Be One of the Best Things for Your Dogs Behaviour

At Help with Hounds, we often remind dog owners that a successful walk isn’t always about distance or constant movement. In fact, one of the most beneficial things you can do for your dog during a walk is simply to sit down and pause together.

Many people believe a good walk means keeping their dog moving the entire time. But dogs experience the world very differently from us. They process their surroundings through sight, sound, and especially smell. Giving them time to quietly observe their environment can be incredibly valuable for their emotional wellbeing and behaviour.
Find a calm spot on your walk, sit down, and allow your dog to watch the world go by. Let them notice people passing, listen to everyday sounds, sniff the air, and take in their surroundings without pressure to move on quickly.
This simple habit offers several important benefits.
Decompression after excitement
If your dog has just left a busy park, completed a training session, or had an energetic interaction with other dogs, sitting quietly helps them settle and regulate their emotions.
Building calm behaviour
Dogs learn that they don’t need to react to everything around them. Watching calmly from a distance helps reduce overexcitement and impulsive responses.
Habituation to the environment
Regular, relaxed exposure to everyday sights and sounds helps dogs become more confident and less reactive over time.
Mental enrichment
Observation and sniffing provide powerful mental stimulation, which can be just as important as physical exercise.
Next time you head out for a walk, try adding a five-minute “watch the world” break. Sometimes the most beneficial thing you can do for your dog… is nothing at all.
If you’re struggling with reactivity, overexcitement, or confidence on walks, Help with Hounds offers professional dog behaviour and training support. Based in Coggeshall, Essex, we provide in-person sessions across Mid and North Essex, as well as online behaviour consultations for dog owners across the UK.
